Oigawa Steam Train ride

A friend recently organised this for us and it was really a great day out. We chose to do the walk/hike around the area but found unless we walked quite fast we couldn't do it all in time before our train left. If you ate your lunch on the train and started walking, you would probably make it. I wouldn't recommend going in Summer, only because the train does not have air-conditioning but it does have ceiling fans.

All the information you need about the train ride and booking can be found here. You can also find a Wikipedia article here.

Tokyo Webcam

I came across this webcam of the Tokyo skyline. Apparently you can see the fireworks display on New Year's Eve. Traditionally NYE is reserved for visiting Buddhist temples to listen to the temple bells, but apparently Tokyo also puts on a good fireworks display, which judging by all fireworks I've seen so far in Japan, will be amazing.

See the webcam here.

Yui, Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka.

I took a day trip to Yui from Shizuoka mainly because it was a random town on the coast.

Unfortunately due to the Tomei Expressway, most of the coast can't be seen from the streets of Yui. It was a beautiful place though and I was able to see Fuji for the first time in a long time and came across Yui Port.

Yui Port.

Yui is known for cherry shrimp and so you will see quite a few of these on the streets of Yui.

 Lining up for fresh seafood.

I think I was fonder of him than he was of me.

After visiting the port, I made my way to the Tokaido Hiroshige Art Museum.

Daidogei 2013

I made a video of all the photos taken at the 2013 Daidogei World Cup. Daidogei is a festival for Street Performers from all around the world that come to Shizuoka, Japan to share their talents. The performers are varied, some are unique and interesting, others are silly and some are just beautiful.

Shimada Obi Festival

The Obi Festival only comes around every 3 years and I missed it the last time I was here, so I wasn't missing it this time! It is a symbolic festival for wishes of prosperity and fertility. I went a little overboard with the photos so I had to pick a few of my favourite from the 100+ photos I took on the day.

Rubbish Day

It's burnable rubbish day! No fancy bins here. You carry your bags of rubbish to the street to designated areas and the trucks pick them up from there. This happens twice a week.

The truth is, the trucks possibly wouldn't even make down some of the narrow streets in my neighbourhood.

Same applies for recycling, unfortunately though this is only once a month for paper and once a month for glass and metal.

My Neighbourhood

The Fire Walking Festival - People eating on the ground in the supermarket carpark.
The local bar 居酒屋

30kph as many of the streets are very narrow and there are a lot of blind corners.
A local kindergarten.

The entrance of a beautiful house around the corner.
